SEO Glossary: Blogroll

In a nutshell: What are blogrolls?

A blogroll is ideal for linking your own or other bloggers' blogs with interesting topics in the sidebar. Even if the link list is no longer used in many places, it is still popular with others.

What is a blogroll?

The blogroll is nothing more than a list of links that is placed in the sidebar of blogs. Basically, the idea behind it is to link other blog domains with similar or interesting topics. These can be your own blogs as well as blogs of other webmasters. For example, to do them a favor.

Especially in the early days of blogs, blogrolls were used almost everywhere. But then came the big turning point, when the blogroll unfortunately lost its importance. The reason for this was the misuse to place sold or rented links in the blogroll. For this reason, it is advisable to use the blogroll exclusively for useful purposes and not to include too many links.

In addition, the majority of bloggers no longer use blogrolls at all, as they are now considered obsolete.

Is a blogroll still useful these days?

Has the blogroll died out and is it anything but useful today? A good question, and one on which opinions differ. While some bloggers reject the blogroll in principle, others still use it.

The question here is what the links in the blogroll are used for and how many are used. If a blogger places 3-5 links to offer the reader real added value, the blogroll is naturally built up. In addition, as we all know, it can't hurt if a domain also has OUTGOING LINKS has. This can send a positive signal to Google and Co. and build links that are thematically relevant to your own blog.

How should a blogroll be structured?

If you want to set up a blogroll, you should pay attention to a few points. These include:

  • It makes sense to only link to trustworthy and "clean" blogs and websites. Are the pages to be linked relevant to the topic? All the better!
  • It can't hurt to check all links in several blog projects at regular intervals. Link corpses with 404 errors can be found and eliminated with just a few clicks.
  • Under no circumstances should too many links be placed in the blogroll. What counts here is Quality instead of quantity. Here again is the point of naturalness, so as not to attract negative attention from search engines.

Unfortunately, some CMS providers such as WordPress have removed blogrolls or menu items such as "Links" from their program. If you still want to install a blogroll, you can install a corresponding plug-in, for example.

Conclusion: What is Blogroll?

Even though blogrolls are no longer used by many people, they are a great way to link to other interesting content. It is important not to overdo it so that the linking looks natural and not too artificial. At the same time, the blogroll offers the advantage of placing one or two outbound links.
