SEO glossary: Topic relevance

In a nutshell: What is topic relevance?

Topic relevance plays an important role in search engine optimization. Especially when backlinks (inbound links) are built, they should be thematically relevant. This is because they can certainly help to achieve better rankings in the search engine results(SERPs).

What is the relevance of the topic?

No matter in which area optimizations are made: Topic relevance should not be neglected under any circumstances and should receive attention. This applies, among other things, if marketers want to place advertising and reach interested parties. It should be as relevant to the topic as possible, as visitors and potentially interested parties are more likely to notice the banners.

However, topic relevance should not be neglected when it comes to backlinks either and should be given particular attention. If a search engine optimization (SEO) is carried out, inbound links are an important factor. Topic-relevant links are preferable to off-topic links.

In a free SEO strategy consultation, we uncover untapped potential and develop a strategy to make you more successful on Google.

Example: A website operator has set up a portal about fully automatic coffee machines. Now he is in the process of collecting new backlinks at regular intervals. If he wants to get links relevant to the topic, he should look around for other domains that are really similar.

In the best case scenario, he will receive inbound links from websites that also deal with the topic of fully automatic coffee machines.

Search engines are now very sophisticated and know very well which topic a page deals with. It is therefore disadvantageous to collect any links here or links that deviate slightly or strongly from the actual topic.

Are topic-relevant backlinks better than off-topic ones?

Is it useful and sensible to build backlinks from other relevant websites? Here are some facts that deal with the topic and at the same time speak in favor of it:

  • As a general rule, when building backlinks, topic-relevant links are preferable to off-topic links.
  • This is not only advantageous from a search engine perspective. It also increases the chance that interested visitors will see the hyperlink on the linking page and click on your page with curiosity. You get referral traffic!
  • If you want to create relevant links, they should not deviate too much. A page about cats should ideally link to another cat page. If a website is about loans, it should ideally link to other loan pages.
  • If exact links relevant to the topic are rather rare, pages close to the topic can also help. A healthy mix helps here (the link image should of course look natural).

How do you find such relevant links?

If webmasters and SEOs are looking for topic-relevant links, they can ask themselves a few questions on this topic. Accordingly, they receive the appropriate answer and decide for or against it.

  • Are the two pages you want to link both relevant to the topic?
  • Are they at least thematically related to each other if there is no precise thematic relevance?

Tip: A lot of research is often required to find relevant links. It can therefore be useful to enter the keyword for which you are looking for a link in a search engine, for example. There are often contact forms on the websites listed there that can be used to make a direct inquiry.

Conclusion: What is topic relevance?

If one website links to another, it can't hurt to pay attention to topic relevance here. This gives search engines and users bonus points, as the linked content helps them and does not suddenly link to another, unexpected topic.

Thematically similar links also fall into this category and are certainly suitable for building backlinks. However, they should not be completely off-topic.
