SEO glossary: Topic relevance

In a nutshell: What is topic relevance?

Topic relevance plays an important role in search engine optimization. Especially when backlinks (inbound links) are built, they should be thematically relevant. This is because they can certainly help to achieve better rankings in the search engine results(SERPs).

What is the topic relevance?

No matter in which area optimizations are made: Topic relevance should not be neglected under any circumstances and should receive attention. This applies, among other things, when marketers want to place advertising and reach interested parties. It should be as relevant to the topic as possible, as visitors and potential prospects perceive the banners better.

But also in terms of backlinks, the topic relevance is not to be neglected at all and should receive special attention. If a search engine optimization (SEO) is carried out, incoming links are an important factor. Here, topic-relevant links are preferable to non-topic links if possible.

In a free SEO strategy talk, we uncover untapped potential and develop a strategy to help you become more successful on Google.

Example: A website operator has set up a portal about fully automatic coffee machines. Now he is in the process of collecting new backlinks at regular intervals. If he wants to get links relevant to the topic, he should look around for other domains that are really similar.

So, in the best case, he will receive inbound links from websites that also deal with the topic of fully automatic coffee machines.

Search engines now work very sophisticated and know very well what topic a page deals with. Therefore, it is disadvantageous to collect any links here or those that deviate slightly to strongly from the actual topic.

Are topic-relevant backlinks better than off-topic ones?

Is it useful and sensible to build backlinks from other topic-relevant websites? Below are some facts that address the issue and speak for it at the same time:

  • As a general rule, when building backlinks, topic-relevant links are preferable to off-topic links.
  • This is not only advantageous from a search engine perspective. It also increases the chance that interested visitors will see the hyperlink on the linking page and click on your page with curiosity. You get referral traffic!
  • If you want to build topic-relevant links, they should not deviate too much. So a page about cats ideally links to another cat page. If a website is about loans, it should ideally link to other loan pages.
  • If exact topic-relevant links are rather rare, topic-related pages can also help. A healthy mix helps here (the link image should look natural, of course).

How to find such topic-relevant links?

If webmasters and SEOs are looking for topic-relevant links, they can ask themselves some questions about this topic. Accordingly, they get the appropriate answer and decide for or against.

  • Are the two pages you want to link to both relevant to the topic?
  • Are they at least thematically related, if already no exact topic relevance?

Tip: A lot of research is often required to find relevant links. It can therefore be useful to enter the keyword for which you are looking for a link in a search engine, for example. There are often contact forms on the websites listed there that can be used to make a direct inquiry.

Conclusion: What is topic relevance?

If one website links to another, it can't hurt to pay attention to topic relevance. This is a plus for search engines and users, as the linked content helps them and does not suddenly link to another, unexpected topic.

Also thematically similar links fall into this grid and are quite suitable to build backlinks. However, they should not be completely off-topic.
