SEO Glossary: Backend

In a nutshell: What is the backend?

A backend represents the technical system of a website and runs in the background. Normal users and visitors of a website do not see anything of it. The goal is to manage individual content and make settings in the backend.

Backend - What is that exactly?

Translating backend, the term "back end" comes out. In the backend, webmasters and website operators get access to all applications and manage content such as blog posts or media here. But the visual appearance can also be customized here.

Moreover, the backend is the administrative part of a website. It is protected by username and password. If you look at the opposite side of the backend, you will find the frontend, i.e. the front end.

If publishers and webmasters want to make a change in the frontend, they log into the backend. Directly afterwards, the desired change is implemented immediately and is directly visible in the frontend.

Especially with a CONTENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (CMS) such as WordPress, the backend is indispensable. Here, among other things, the writing and modification of articles takes place. In addition, the backend of CMSs is simply structured in order to maintain an overview even with large amounts of data.

What tasks does a backend perform?

After an administrator logs into the backend, various functions and tasks are available.

Included are:

  • Design customization
  • Creation and maintenance of text content, images and videos
  • User management and control
  • Various optimization measures such as SEO
  • Install and manage plug-ins to use specific applications and advanced features
  • Processing, administration and control of transactions such as orders in store systems

How does a backend work?

A backend basically consists of 3 components:

  • Application
  • Server
  • Database

When users visit a website, they only see a front end. Depending on the content, users read blog posts or watch videos, for example. Such data is stored on the server and managed in the database. In the process, the backend creates and uses hierarchical structures in which everything is clearly arranged.

When a user retrieves specific content, the backend directly accesses the database and server to display all files and information. In addition, applications in the back end help to perform certain processes.

How important is a backend for search engine optimization?

The backend helps to carry out targeted measures in the course of search engine optimization. Among other things, webmasters have the option of defining meta descriptions, titles and other elements such as alt tags. Optimizing content and page analyses can also be carried out quickly and easily with modern backends.

Especially with large amounts of data and many content entries, backends with their numerous functions are indispensable.

Conclusion: What is a backend?

A backend is ideal for making various settings to the system and changes to the content. With just a few clicks, webmasters can change the look of a website (frontend), for example, so that it is displayed immediately after saving. Numerous extensions (plug-ins) also help to integrate useful functions into the backend.
